When the Caucasus blooms: rhododendrons, lilies and alpine meadows
June and July bring the high meadows of Svaneti and Tusheti to life. What flowers when, and where to see it without leaving the trail.

In June and July the high meadows of Svaneti and Tusheti are at their most colourful, and Caucasus wildflowers are reason enough for a summer trip. Caucasian rhododendron — deka in Georgian — covers slopes above the tree line with cream-coloured flowers, while Caucasian lilies rise above the grass at the edge of the forest.
Where to see them
The trail to the Koruldi lakes above Mestia and the meadows around Ushguli are reliable places to start. Bring a lens for close-ups and come early, before the wind picks up.
Guide’s tipPlease don’t pick the flowers. Many alpine plants grow slowly, and some are protected.
