Svaneti in autumn: the two weeks you shouldn’t miss
From late September into mid-October the valleys turn red and gold. When to go, which walks to choose and what to pack for cold nights.

For about two weeks, usually from late September into mid-October, Svaneti in autumn is the most colourful place in Georgia. The yellow azalea — ieli — that flowers in June turns crimson on every slope, birch and larch go gold, and the first snow settles on the peaks.
The best autumn walks
Day hikes from Mestia to the Chalaadi glacier and the Mestia Cross viewpoint, and the walk from Ushguli toward the Shkhara glacier, are at their finest now: shorter days, but clear air and quiet trails.
Guide’s tipPlan your longest walk for the middle of the day. Mornings in the valleys are often misty and cold until the sun clears the ridge.
What to pack
Mornings can be close to freezing. Bring a warm jacket, a hat and gloves alongside your summer kit, and plan to be off the trail before dark.
