Getting to Tusheti: the road over the Abano Pass
One unpaved road, a pass at about 2,850 metres and a short season. How the drive works, how long it takes and where to stay once you arrive.

The road to Tusheti is a single unpaved track over the Abano Pass, at about 2,850 metres. It usually opens in June and closes with the first heavy snow in October; outside that window the region is almost cut off.
How long it takes
Allow six to seven hours from Tbilisi to Omalo, with the last 70 km on gravel. Local drivers cross every day in season, and we never schedule the drive after heavy rain.
Where to stay
Guesthouses in Omalo, Dartlo and the nearby villages are simple, warm and serve home-made food — often Tushetian guda cheese and khinkali.
Guide’s tipEvenings in Omalo are cool even in August — pack a warm layer.
